Hello! Hello? Er, HELLO! It’s your cat here!
Can’t you hear me? Okay, just give me a second while I climb up onto your desk, accidentally knock your drink onto the floor (hehe), and take a seat on your laptop… yes, much better. Now you have to give me attention.
What?! I’m being too needy? Me?! I don’t know what you’re talking about.
Okay okay okay—maybe we cats can sometimes be a little clingy. Maybe. Alright, a lot. In fact, yes, we cats can be very clingy. Sometimes.
But it’s not our fault! You might think us cold and aloof, but cats form deep bonds with their humans, actually. The least you could do is act a little grateful. You know? Now stroke my head.
Alright, I can tell from your perplexed expression that you’re not going to give me any attention until I explain. You might as well sit back and get comfortable then. I’m going to tell you everything you need to know about why your cat is so needy.
Let’s clear something up straight away. Cats absolutely do get attached to their humans—we just don’t show it how you might expect, like a dog slobbering all over your shoes. Come on, we have some class.
And on that, some cats form especially strong connections with their humans. This level of attachment varies from cat to cat and can depend on many factors, like:
Some breeds (looking at you, Siamese, Abyssinians, and Ragdolls) are particularly famous for sticking close to their humans—but any cat can become deeply attached.
Why does your cat follow you around? Do you really have to ask? It’s because you make us feel safe!
When something feels uncertain—a new noise, a change in routine, unfamiliar people—we’ll seek comfort from the one thing that feels safe and familiar: you. We’ve become quite secure in your presence over the years, you know? And sitting near you, touching you, or even just watching you go about your day helps us feel reassured.
We cats love a good routine. Feeding times, play sessions, quiet evenings—and yes (again), you.
If my schedule changes or I’m not sure what’s coming next, I might stick closer than usual. This can look like:
Does that mean we cats are clingy? Sure, if you insist—but I call it helping to restore my balance.
Surprise! I like hanging out with you.
Social bonding is important to many cats, and some of us genuinely crave interaction. And if I’ve learned that being near you leads to strokes, playtime, snacks, compliments, treats, quiet endearments, acts of everlasting devotion, sworn oaths of loyalty, lifelong servitude to my comfort, the unspoken understanding that your life choices will henceforth be made to optimize my pleasure—then of course I’ll keep coming back for more.
Who wouldn’t?
Now, all cats may be a little needy here and there, but sometimes you may wonder if or why your cat is more clingy than usual. Well, there could be a good reason.
As cats age, or if we’re feeling under the weather, we may need extra reassurance. Health issues or cognitive changes can make us feel less confident, increasing our desire to stay close to the person we trust most.
If clinginess appears suddenly or feels intense, a vet check is always the best next step.
The bond between cats and humans is pretty special, right? But yes, I suppose it can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially if I:
If that sounds familiar, know that I’m not being deliberately difficult—I just need a little extra support. Speaking of which…
Here are a few gentle ways to support us cats while helping us both feel balanced:
Consistency helps me relax:

We can gently work on spending time apart:
Boredom can look a lot like neediness, so aim to keep me both physically and mentally engaged. Try providing things like:
Using FELIWAY Optimum helps send comforting messages of enhanced serenity throughout the home. This is a great way to support my emotional balance and help me feel secure even when you’re not right beside me.
Now, if you hadn’t realized yet, I’m a cat—we don’t understand everything in the way you humans do. So, please don’t scold or push me away when I’m asking for reassurance. We’re unlikely to understand why we’re being punished, and there’s a good chance it’ll damage our bond together because I can no longer trust you to make me feel safe.
Instead, catch those moments when I’m calm and relaxed on my own, and reward them. Nothing goes down better than a treat!
So, if you’re wondering why your cat is so needy, remember this: I’m not trying to be a nuisance. I just like you. And with gentle support, and a little help from FELIWAY, there are plenty of ways we can maintain that bond without either of us feeling overwhelmed. A win-win, right?
Now, head strokes please—I’ve earned them.
